The Carthusian Order is a Roman Catholic monastic order founded in 1084 by St. Bruno of Cologne in the Chartreuse Mountains of France. It is known for combining a life of solitude life with communal worship, silence, and contemplation. Today, there are about 23 charterhouses worldwide, including the Charterhouse of the Transfiguration on Mount Equinox in Vermont.
